Attic Fan or Ceiling Fan? It’s BAKE-rsfield!

In the quest to stay comfortable and combat escalating temperatures in our area, many homeowners turn to fan installation to bolster the results of traditional HVAC cooling. We  install them all, from ceiling fans, to mechanical attic fans. When choosing for your home, do you know which fan installation is giving you the best results?

The Benefits of a Fan Installation

No matter the fan type, they can assist in reducing energy costs and increasing comfort in the summer months. They don’t actually reduce the temperature of the room, so how do they help? Well, fans assist in removing moisture from your home, keeping humidity under control somewhat. Additionally, moving air naturally feels cooler on the skin, helping to reduce body temperature; thus, you need to run your AC a bit less.

Additionally, in the case of a ceiling fan, they can provide a unique and interesting way to add some style. Another layer of design, or an additional fixture can do a lot for the beauty of your home.

What is the Purpose of an Attic Fan?

While ceiling fans are a slightly more direct cooling method, an attic fan can do just as much for your home, if not more! An attic fan is installed in ,where else, the attic. This fixture can assist in reducing your cooling costs by up to twenty percent! How? Well…

Think of your attic like a big envelope, or bubble. It tends to hold onto its temperature, and because it is exposed radiant heat (sun) and collects remnant heat from your home (heat rises), it tends to be much much hotter than the rest of your home. If the inside of your home is seventy, your attic could be up to one hundred! This basically boils down to you having a massive natural heat source directly above your home. Not good for business when you’re trying to cool things down!

Attic fans mitigate and reduce attic temperatures, and by extension, the temperature of your home! They do this by improving ventilation, and increasing cool airflow throughout the attic. The difference can be huge!

Which Fan Installation is Best?

Honestly, On Point would suggest both. With a proper attic fan installation augmented by ceiling fans, you can find yourself relying on your HVAC system so much less. This is drastically less expensive, and keeps your cooling system from overworking (which makes it last longer, and need less repair) to boot!

Common Homeowner Questions

We wanted to discuss a fairly common topic we’ve noted with our patrons as of late. We’ve been getting a lot of “Is this normal?” Or “Is this a common problem?” questions on our projects and calls recently. This got us to thinking; maybe people would be interested in learning a bit about what electrical problems we encounter regularly.

What would we consider to be a fairly normal issue? And what would be an oddball? Answers to this and more today in:

No problem is ever “normal’, per se. That’s why it’s a problem! But there are certainly some issues we see regularly:

·         Broken, failed or useless outlets. More common for older homes and buildings, outlets that have become faulty is a fairly regular issue. Over time, the wiring in outlets settles, and begin making contact it shouldn’t be, making the outlet spark, or become inactive.

·         Poor or faulty appliance wiring. Usually this is due to shoddy electrical work, or Do It Yourselfers (Nothing at all against DIY solutions, we just feel that those kinds of projects don’t belong when a small mistake can mean a burning house!). Incorrectly wired appliances can spark, work sporadically or create power surges.

·         Blinking or stuttering lights. Evidence of power surges or a beat up breaker box, this problem might actually be our most commonly serviced issue.

·         Generator failure. Most homeowners leave a generator completely unattended until they need it. This can be a problem, as over time they may begin to wear out or fail to remain operable. Regular generator maintenance is important!

Why Are These Problems Important?

So why do we feel like it’s a good idea to clue you in on our most common repairs? Partially because information is fun, but mostly because problem is the key word here. Understanding that these common issues are indeed problems that should be looked into by our Baltimore electricians is important.

Any instance of poor wiring, flickering lights, under-maintained equipment or general electrical funny business should be addressed right away! Leaving them alone or ignoring them can be hazardous, or can lead to much larger electrical problems. So have them handled by a pro right away!
